How does PCRI contribute to prostate cancer research and awareness?

PCRIThe Prostate Cancer Research Institute has been contributing to prostate cancer research and awareness since it was founded in 1996. Dr. Mark Sholz, one of the founding doctors, explains what PCRI does exactly and how that benefits men. A patient who understands his disease and his treatment options can better communicate with his doctor to get the treatment he needs. An informed patient is likely to have a better quality of life. PCRI uses a variety of tools to keep men informed about their disease.

Mark Scholz, MD: PCRI is essentially an educational foundation and the PCRI uses various means to help men understand their situation better. PCRI has a quarterly newsletter, has a website that get over a million visitors a year on a website, we have an annual conference for patients, doctors do attend, it is a very high quality conference every September in prostate cancer awareness month, but its primarily designed to educate patients so they can get the best treatment. The most unique thing about the PCRI is we have a trained helpline, and so people can speak to human beings about their specific situation. Prostate cancer is a very complex and confusing situation often times and so trained experts can expedite the process of figuring out where you stand and about some other logical treatment options likely for you. PCRI has recently started a new program to teach prostate cancer support group leaders and others that want to delve in more deeply into understanding this, it is called the mentor program 12 week course of in depth study about prostate cancer. The PCRI is a non profit foundation funded by donations and through government support and some industry support and it has been around for about 15-16 years now, and we are very excited about the chance to help close to 3 million prostate cancer survivors in the United States alone and 250,000 new cases diagnosed every year.
